Our brains produce waves that EEG can measure, with different amplitudes depending on our state—whether active, asleep, stressed, or relaxed. For instance, beta waves (12 to 30 Hz) dominate when we are awake, while gamma waves (around 40 Hz) appear during intense mental activity. Alpha waves (8 to 12 Hz) are prevalent during light relaxation, theta waves (4 to 8 Hz) during deep relaxation or REM sleep, and delta waves (0.5 to 4 Hz) during deep sleep.
